I love July 4th: the fireworks, friends and family, and, of course, the food. Each year I try to add another fun dish to my menu.
We always have our traditional Italian Sausage and Peppers that my guests eagerly look forward to every year. Then there is the BOARS head hotdogs and sauerkraut, and the hot dog cart ‘Red Onions’ that my sister Louise makes. This year I decided to be a little bikini conscious by adding grilled vegetables. They can be prepared the day before and served room temperature (anything that can be prepped before a party is ideal in my book). Then there is the delicious Pasta Primavera Salad served cold making it an ideal summer party side dish. For my gluten free guests, I like to substitute the pasta for risotto.
The nice thing about owning Maria’s is that I know all of our family recipes for these dishes so that I can make them at home BUT if I am in a rush, I know I can just call my neighborhood location and order it!
The one menu item I cannot order from Maria’s is Watermelon Margarita (since we can’t send cocktails to go). This year, I used a similar drink to our margarita that I discovered in my email from Food and Wine Magazine. I modified it just a bit using Agave syrup instead of sugar.
Then there is the best part of the meal: Desserts. Desserts are really simple for me. I just order a couple dozen of our homemade chocolate chip cookies, our fudgy Callibaut chocolate brownies (cut into 4 bite size pieces) and the MINI Philadelphia cheesecakes all adorned with American Flag tooth picks.

Whether you are staying home, going to friend’s potluck or headed to the park, I hope you enjoy your day and appreciate the freedom we have in this great country… and if you don’t want to cook everything your neighborhood Maria’s will be there to help free you from the kitchen.
